Obesity is a chronic disease associated with increased risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) such as atherosclerotic CVD and heart failure. Current guidelines recommend a holistic, complications-centric approach to obesity assessment and management that focuses on improving long-term health outcomes rather than weight loss alone.

This interactive module reviews the link between excess and/or dysfunctional adiposity and CV risk, and presents evidence supporting the CV benefits of lifestyle interventions, bariatric surgery, and obesity medications. Learners will explore the latest guideline-recommended approaches to obesity assessment, staging, and management in people with CVD or elevated CV risk, and apply learnings to clinical scenarios through interactive quizzes and case-based exercises.

After participating in this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Discuss the association between obesity and CVD and the need for a holistic and sustainable approach to care for people living with both diseases.
  • Construct individualized treatment plans for people living with obesity and CVD or high risk for CVD, based on a range of factors.
  • Implement evidence-based approaches to obesity care that incorporate medications with proven benefits in both obesity and CVD, where appropriate.
  • Identify barriers to therapy adherence and support individuals to address them as part of a long-term obesity care strategy.
This activity is intended for endocrinology and primary healthcare professionals (HCPs) involved in the management of obesity, together with other specialists involved in treating obesity-related diseases.
