Future Leaders Advancing Research in Endocrinology 2016

The Future Leaders Advancing Research in Endocrinology (FLARE) program is for basic science and clinical research trainees from underrepresented minority communities who have demonstrated achievement in endocrine research. FLARE program components provide structured leadership development and in-depth, hands-on training in topics ranging from grantsmanship to lab management.

Presented by the Endocrine Society's Committee on Diversity and Inclusion and Trainee and Career Development Core Committee.

FLARE Components

  • The FLARE Workshop two-day training teaches the “business of research” and the skills trainees need to establish themselves as independent researchers. The 2016 Workshop was held February 4-6, 2016 in Los Angeles, CA.
  • In the FLARE Internship, trainees serve on Society governance committees and mentor undergraduates in the Minority Access Program, or they participate in the Keystone Symposia Fellows Program.
  • The FLARE Mentoring Network connects underrepresented minority trainees to accomplished biomedical and clinical scientists online and in-person. The FLARE ENDO Abstract Award supports trainees’ as they present at the Society’s Annual Meeting & Expo (ENDO).

This activity is supported by an educational grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Target Audience

This activity should be of substantial interest to advanced graduate students, clinical fellows and post-doctoral fellows from underrepresented minority groups engaged in endocrine related research.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this education activity, learners will be able to:

  • Employ new knowledge and practical management skills critical to a successful career in biomedical research.
  • Build effective relationships with peers and faculty that support strategic collaboration, leadership development, and career advancement.
